Presenter: Alec Geist, Pinpoint Communications
The guest speaker for this meeting was Alec Geist, COO of Pinpoint Communications. Mr. Geist provided an overview of the originating
company (a small town telco) and current activities of the various
Pinpoint businesses. The company has investments in fiber optic routes
in Omaha and between Denver, Chicago and St. Louis.
The *facilities-based, local access and long-haul providers* have
strategic advantages in supporting business applications. Smaller
service providers are able to be more innovative to developing customer
transport solutions. In addition, the economics of scale and scope of
smaller service providers can pass through operational savings because
they do not have to be "all things to all people".
Pinpoint will also open a new Data Center facility in February at the
Scott Technology Center serving small to medium size businesses. Ralph
Armendariz, the Omaha branch manager in charge of developing the Data
Center facilities, will discuss current trends in data center storage
and connectivity.
Pinpoint exemplifies previous discussions regarding local solutions for
a more competitive communications market. The ITC has recently hosted a
wireless and an IP communications provider. Another meeting is planned
for a wireless presentation to better promote the concepts and their
value to Omaha's economy. The Omaha economic market maintains its
premier status as a technology leader with local investment or local
leadership in our smaller companies, such as Pinpoint, and our national
local providers, Qwest and Cox.
