The guest speaker for this meeting was ITC President Michael Shonka, represening SCOLA. SCOLA is an acronym
for Satellite Communications for Learning and the Latin root word for
scholar. SCOLA transmits international news and cultural programming via
four satellite channels and the Internet. Currently, there is programming
from over 80 countries in 70 languages.
The users of the programming content include government agencies and
academic institutions. Academic institutions use the content for studies
in foreign langauages, geography and international affairs. SCOLA is the
largest supplier of content for the "less commonly taught languages."
