The guest speaker for this meeting was Dave Ryan, Sideline Reporter for ESPN at the College World Series. Dave spoke to the ITC two years ago and was very well received. This time he talked about the technology of the broadcast, and, of course, about the upcoming CWS games.
Dave Ryan has worked for ESPN/ESPN2 since 1996, calling play-by-play on NHL, and tennis telecasts and (since 1997) serving as the sideline reporter for ESPN's Big Ten college football games. His assignments have included play-by-play on the Stanley Cup playoffs; the Australian Open; the college hockey Final Four; select college basketball including the women's NCAA tournament; MLB; softball and Arena Football. He also has hosted tennis telecasts for ESPN International. As a sideline reporter, Ryan also has worked the College World Series and the Little League World Series. In the studio, he has hosted college basketball, the NCAA baseball tournament selection show and the College World Series preview show.
Prior to joining ESPN, Ryan served as sports director at WNSS-AM in Syracuse, N.Y. (1995-1997). He also served as the weekend sports anchor at WSTM-TV in Syracuse, N.Y. (1991-92) and later became the sports director (1992-97). While at WSTM-TV Ryan earned a New York State Broadcasters Association award in 1992 for his investigation into the suspension of a Syracuse athlete.
As a weekend sports anchor at WBOY-TV in Clarksburg, W.V. from 1990-91, Ryan covered local events at West Virginia University athletics. He also worked as a sportscaster and performed play-by-play duties for the West Virginia "MetroNews" radio network (1989-90).
Ryan formerly broadcast a variety of sports on the radio at Syracuse University: football (sideline reporter), men's and women's basketball (play-by-play), men's and women's soccer (play-by-play), men's lacrosse (play-by-play) and women's volleyball (play-by-play). He continues to teach a weekly sports reporting class at Syracuse University as an Adjunct Professor.
Ryan earned a communications degree from Syracuse University in 1989. He provided play-by-play for select Orangemen events on the campus radio station, WAER, and garnered a New York State Broadcasters Association award for outstanding coverage of the 1989 Big East men's basketball tournament.
Before going to Syracuse, Ryan founded his high school's first radio station in 1984. He worked at the station for two years before graduation.
A native of New York, NY, Ryan is married with two children.
