The guest speaker waw Dan Anderson,M.D., founder of PocketMD - www.pocketmd.com - a wireless PDA platform for the healthcare industry.
Dr. Anderson is currently a cardiology resident at UNMC. He was an
early adopter of Personal Digital Assistants (PDA) and saw the practical
uses for the medical, nursing and pharmacy professions. Dr. Anderson
talked about the uses of wireless technology in hospitals and current
industry trends. He also reviewed the concepts behind PocketMD.
PocketMD is a Pocket PC based platform that is essentially a
productivity tool for physicians and nurses. The software provides time
saving and error reduction functions, as well as, general information
resources. Users can view and write their patient lists, allergies,
medications, lab reports, notes and even vitals - to name some of the
applications. The PDA platform is then tied into the Hospital
Information System (HIS) as part of an enterprise network. Due to
obvious privacy issues, a security system has been added to protect
personal information.
PocketMD is headquartered in Omaha and is one of the model technology
companies that demonstrates how local entrepreneurs can develop their
ideas when financing is available. Together, with local members of the
business community and private investors, a company has been created to
develop medical software for use on PDAs. The further development of
this product will create more opportunities in the local community. We
certainly look forward to hearing more about this company.
