Presenter: David Entrekin
The guest speaker was David Entrekin, a national consultant in
technology manufacturing. Mr. Entrekin discussed "Revolutionary
Advances in PC Technology - Intel and IBM Making EUV Processors." This
constituted of a high level overview of a new technology for the computer
industry and what it will mean to business operations and the home user, as well as
a very practical review of the near term future that sounds
more like -Star Trek- than something just over the horizon.
The upcoming EUV (Extreme Ultra Violet) technology will change computing
as we know it within the next few years. EUV processing chips allow for
extremely fast processing speeds - in the range of 50 GHz - compared to
the one to two available today. The speed is improved due to the
addition of copper in the chip. IBM is building a plant in Fiskkill NY
that will be producing chips by mid-2003 for their mainframe computers.
Intel has invested over $3.5 billion for a new plant in Albuquerque NM
which will start production in 2005 for the PC and server market.
Moore's Law seems to hold for the initial cost projections of the new
chips - about half the cost of the current Pentium.
Mr. Entrekin also discussed the use of this technology for the Point
of Sale (POS) equipment market. POS - kiosks have had problems with
real time computing and this new technology will bridge those issues.
The new advances in computing technology will enhance tracking from the
POS, through the back office processing and to delivery to the buyer.
Business operations need to begin planning -now- for this new technology
to remain competitive in the market and take advantage of the new
efficiencies in manufacturing, distribution and delivery of products or
services.
